About this episode

Leaves contain multiple pigments throughout the growing season, but green chlorophyll is so abundant it masks the others. As days shorten in autumn, trees begin withdrawing nutrients from leaves before shedding them. Chlorophyll breaks down first, revealing the orange and yellow pigments that were present all along. The red color is different: it is produced fresh during the senescence process when sugars trapped in the leaf help produce a pigment called anthocyanin. The tree is not dying. It is doing its accounting, pulling every useful molecule back in before the leaves fall.

Daniel and Mom examine what makes leaves green in summer, why the orange and yellow were hidden, how anthocyanin produces the reds, and what the whole process reveals about what a tree is actually doing in autumn.

Things to remember

01

Green chlorophyll masks other pigments in summer. When it breaks down in autumn, yellow and orange are revealed.

02

The orange and yellow pigments were present in the leaf all summer, hidden by the dominant green.

03

Red pigments called anthocyanins are produced fresh in autumn when trapped sugars interact with the leaf.

04

The process is the tree reclaiming nutrients before shedding leaves, not the leaf dying passively.

“Next time I have to rake leaves I'm telling you I'm helping the tree.”
