Gas vs Diesel: Why Do Cars Need Different Fuels?

About this episode

Gasoline and diesel engines both burn fuel to produce power, but they ignite that fuel in fundamentally different ways. A gasoline engine mixes fuel with air and uses a spark plug to ignite the mixture at the right moment. A diesel engine has no spark plugs. Instead it compresses air so forcefully that the compression alone raises the temperature high enough to ignite diesel fuel when it is injected. The squeeze replaces the spark. This difference in ignition method produces different engine characteristics, with diesel typically offering more torque at lower revolutions and better fuel economy on long runs, while gasoline engines generally rev more freely and produce more power at higher speeds.

Daniel and Mom examine the ignition difference, what it means for engine design, why diesel trucks dominate long-haul freight, and what the practical differences mean for how each fuel type is used.

Things to remember

01

Gasoline engines use a spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture at the right moment.

02

Diesel engines have no spark plugs. They compress air until it is hot enough to ignite diesel on its own.

03

Diesel typically produces more torque at lower speeds, making it suited for trucks and long-haul applications.

04

The ignition difference leads to different engine designs, characteristics, and ideal use cases.

“Next time I see those two pumps I'm going to think about tiny sparks and giant squeezes.”
